Diesel Mechanical
This transmission was used on the two most numerous classes of small shunters; the 142 0-6-0's by the Drewry Car Company, and the 230 locomotives of the broadly similar BR Swindon/Doncaster design. The 204HP Gardner diesel engine is coupled to a 5 speed epicyclic gearbox with a reversing gearbox for directional control. A jack shaft and coupling rods transmit the power to the six driving wheels.
Between diesel engine and gearbox on some locomotives may be a fluid or mechanical clutch.
Diesel mechanical shunting locomotives are a good choice as a first scale model from the pioneering era.
Only one main line diesel mechanical locomotive was built – The Fell Locomotive, and this was not multiplied to production batches. See also under Prototypes.
