The 900 HP diesel-electric Clayton was designed and introduced as the second generation of Bo-Bo Type 1. The single centre cab design of the locomotive was to overcome the poor visibility of the otherwise successful English Electric Type 1 of the D8000 - D8127 series. 117 of the class were built between 1962 and 1965 by the Clayton Equipment Co. and their sub-contractor Beyer Peacock & Co.
The locomotives were allocated to the Scottish and the North Eastern Regions but proved unreliable in service and withdrawals started as early as July 1968, with the whole class eliminated by December 1971. Some locos were less than five years old when withdrawn, and the majority were cut-up at Glasgow Works in the early 70's. D8568 is preserved on the Chinnor Railway.
Several of the class allocated were to 51L Thornaby, and they were a common sight during my school days in Stockton-on-Tees. I travelled to Scotland many times to see them in operation during the late 60's/early 70's and later saw them being scrapped at St Rollox Works.
The interest to model a Clayton comes from this era, and the chosen subject is D8615 of the Beyer Peacock batch, which was a North Eastern Region locomotive. Drawings in 4mm scale and direct measurements from the preserved example have been used to build the model as shown in the photographs.
The model has four traction motors, is powered by a 12V battery and controlled with an electronic 'black-box'. Livery will be green with full yellow ends. The chassis was fabricated in 2003, but the cab and bonnets were only started in 2012.
