This model of a BR 1/506 unfitted 20 Ton Goods Brake Van was constructed in 2008, and was photographed at each stage of manufacture. Model drawings and dimensions are by the builder, starting with a basic outline sketch in a book, complimented by direct measurement of preserved examples.
The original Brake Van was built at Faverdale Works in Darlington.
The images attempt to show the production methods at key stages to completion, and then entering service at the end of a freight train. All modelling is by traditional engineering skills with extensive use of chain drilling, hacksaw and files. The cabin was made from 142 separate pieces of wood, each one chamfered and then glued together with PVA. The photographs are intended as self explanatory without captions, but please use the contact page for additional information if required.
