Electro-Diesel Locomotives
In the early 60's there were still non-electrified routes on the Southern Region and some passenger workings such as the Boat Trains included working into the docks where no third rails were available. In marshalling yards the electrified third rail was considered a danger to ground staff.
Therefore on diagrams which included running on routes with electrified and non-electrified sections a straight electric locomotive posed limitations. The answer was an electric locomotive with a small diesel engine/generator which could provide power on the non-electrified part of the working.
The initial JA electro-diesels E6001-6 were built at BR's Eastleigh Works in 1962 with components supplied by English Electric. Following evaluation of these locomotives an additional 43 locomotives, with a slightly higher tractive effort and a maximum speed of 90mph, were supplied direct from English Electric's Vulcan Works in 1965. The second batch were numbered E6007-49 and classified JB. These versatile locomotives were one of the modern traction success stories and many are still at work today.
Ten of the 1958 Doncaster built HA electrics were found surplus to requirements by 1964 and with the success of the JA/JB they were converted to HB electro-diesels at Crewe works, and numbered E6101-10.
